Highland Healthcare Associates Independent Physicians Association (IPA), established in 1990, is an organization of nearly 85 independent primary care clinicians and over 300 specialist clinicians located in the Winchester/Woburn area, with locations stretching as far south as Winthrop, as far east as Lynnfield, as far north as Lawrence, and as far west as Auburn. Our primary care clinicians are not employed by a system, but instead are in private practices delivering high touch, personalized primary care to pediatric and adult patients. Many have panels that are open to new patients.

Our primary care clinicians (PCCs) include Pediatricians, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants, in many practices. They focus on the needs of each individual patient and the patient’s unique set of circumstances while at the same time practicing within the context of ‘Population Health’, a concept that describes an emphasis on preventive care and chronic disease management delivered in ways that promote optimum health in partnership with each patient.

Our PCCs refer to high quality, high value specialists to help you manage your healthcare dollars while at the same time receiving great care. We are proud members of the Tufts Medicine Integrated Network, which extends our geography from as far north as Lowell and as far south to the Cape, and extending west to the Metrowest area. Additionally, the network includes the services that Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Children’s Hospital provide at both the Boston campus and multiple satellite locations that help you get your care closer to home. Our clinicians offer telehealth and in person services as appropriate and in most instances healthcare portals to further engage with you to manage your care.

The Highland Healthcare Associates IPA (Highland), a not-for-profit physician organization has over 400 clinician members, including nearly 85 private practice PCPs and over 300 specialists. We are dedicated to raising the quality of patient care, preserving clinician independence and autonomy, and improving the professional lives of our clinicians. If you are a Primary Care Physician, or a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) with a primary care panel who values your independence, and desires:

Membership in an organization dedicated to preserving private practice, and is run by practicing physicians, rather than hospital or system administrators,
To keep your current Community Hospital affiliation, and
To select or keep your current certified Electronic Medical Record

Since our formation in 1990, Highland has been governed by a Board of Directors comprised solely of full-time practicing physicians, a majority of whom are primary care physicians. Our organization is supported by a devoted team of Provider Relations & Contract Operations and Quality & Performance Improvement (QPI) professionals, and several PCP and Specialist Medical Directors (who are practicing physicians in our IPA).

We have a history of offering market competitive health insurer contracts and a track record of strong risk contract performance. We also offer a variety of Business Support services including preferred pricing for supplies, IT services, EMR support and billing services, and more to help our private practices with expense management.

In addition, we offer EMR services to our clinicians through our “sister” organization, Highland Management. This dedicated team assists our practices with optimization and support of EMR systems.

Since 2005, we have been working diligently to further clinical integration within our Highland community of primary care clinicians (PCCs) and across our larger clinician network, the new Tufts Medicine Integrated Network (TMIN). Together with TMIN, we hold several commercial insurer contracts and participate in both Medicare and Medicaid Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). Our dedicated Provider Relations team is here to support you with managing these payor relationships, trouble-shooting issues, and enrolling and on-boarding new clinicians and staff in your practices.

Highland is passionately committed to the quadruple aim: improving quality, efficiency, patient experience and clinician satisfaction. Our PRIDE (Providing Incentives for the Delivery of Excellent) Patient Care Program aligns the clinicians’ incentives with the Quadruple Aim. The PRIDE program includes significant efforts to better integrate the shared patient care responsibilities and collegiality between Highland PCCs, Highland Specialists and TMIN Specialists and to strengthen the collaboration within our community and across our network.
